The mighty Butthole Surfers!
By NervesOnce upon a time a received the album Rembrandt Pussyhorse by the Butthole Surfers when I was in the 7th grade. The rest is history. I owe this band a lot. They helped mold my love of music outside of the mainstream and realize there is much more than what you hear on the radio and see on Mtv. Thank you guys, I truly owe you a lot. I have even dedicated an entore week before X-mas ever year to listening to ONLY Butthole music. Hope you all enjoy.

LSD anyone? School's for fools
By NervesThis is one of my favorite bands from back in highschool. Life, Sex, and Death. They put out one album , which is now out of print. Stanley, the vocalist, was a supposed idiot-savant. Crazy as shit, never bathed, but wrote genius lyrics and prose on life. These guys were gold! Straight from Chicago here is LSD.

Animal Alpha "Bundy"
By JitterbugThanks to Mariano_Alpha for introducing us to this crew. The video is enigmatic and is just the push you need to send you spiraling into a violently bad trip. The song kicks into high gear at 1:20! Enjoy.

Volbeat
By JitterbugThanks to Qwaint for telling us about this Danish Viking Rock band ! They remind me a lot of Clutch, and we know how much Nerves listens to Clutch on the ship. I am expecting to hear a lot more of Volbeat, which is cool by me, because they are pretty bad ass!

A live clip from one of the heaviest bands ever featured on TS
By NervesHere are the Cavalera brothers back together belting out a live version of 'Wasting Away' featured on TS 49. These guys are just sick live. One of the roughest shows ever Soulfly and opening bands Snot and HedPE. Fact: Nerves' old band, 'Buford' played this at every live show they ever played.

Their music is wild and exciting and different from damn near everything else that the Pop magnates shove down your aural throats. Go out and buy their album, Le Pop, before you enrage this Captain and are forced to walk the plank!

RIAA - Talkingship Weighs In
By JitterbugThe RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is a group that represents most of the major recording labels in the United States. Somewhere between 80% and 90% of all music sold in this country is protected by the RIAA. So why does this matter to you?
Are you a criminal when you purchase a cd and take it home, burn it to your harddrive and upload it to your i-pod. I'd bet you would say, "Of course not," and the RIAA agrees with you. Or at least it did. In 2005 they said "it's perfectly lawful to take a CD that you've purchased, upload it onto your computer, put it onto your iPod." No worries! I buy all of my music (believe it or not its true, I really do!) so this won't affect me. WHOA! Hold on a second. What's this I have from just one short year later? In 2006, the RIAA said that copying a CD to a hard drive or to an ipod constitutes infringement upon their copyright laws and is not considered Fair Use! So which is it?
And for that matter, how am I the bad guy here? I support music more than anyone I know, and I try my best to turn people onto new artists. I might occaisionally burn a disc from a friend, but I spend more cash on music than damn near anyone I've ever met! Why would the music companies focus any time or energy on me? It doesn't make any sense, so I take a bit of comfort in the thought, "They'll never come knocking on my door."
Cue the news from today. June 18th, 2009: A Jury ruled that a 32 year old mother of four, Jammie Thomas-Rasset willfully violated copyright laws on 24 -no fucking shit people, that's not a mistake: 24 tracks. She was charged $80,000 per track. Can I stress that by repeating it? $80,000 per track! Last I checked, tracks cost $0.99 each ($1.29 if they come with a nifty i-Tunes bell symbol of which I've never truly understood.) WTF!
Is this bitch controlling a black market ring on burned music? Is she masterminding a vicious underground rebellion aimed at stealing billions from a billion dollar industry? Is she Kim Jon Il's secret American contact? Or is she being used as a nasty warning to all of us to stop burning cds? Take a moment to decide. . . Time's up. This is bullshit through and through.
I can sympathize with the recording industry's concern about piracy. I can understand their desire to send a message that they will not stand idly by and watch this happen. But they are out of their fucking minds if they think this is the answer.
All the RIAA is achieving in this suit is enraging the majority of their customer base. And since they can't make up their mother-fucking-suit-and-tie-minds about what constitutes copyright infringement in the first place, they lump you and I in the same basket with this "criminal-MUSIC LOVER" that they are charging 1.92 MILLION for downloading 24 songs. Perhaps they need to accept the shift in their customer base here. The music industry is going digital, whether they like it or not. In ten years we will all have our entire music collection strapped to our waist while we jam out to Kings of Leon on the treadmill. That is the way of the future, and they are doing NOTHING to help the bands signed to the labels in the RIAA. But then again, did we ever think they gave a shit about the bands in the first place? Get real.
Here's the Talkingship solution: We're not asking you to STOP buying albums by artists signed to RIAA labels. Like I said at the beginning of this article, 80-90% of albums are in this group. But we CAN ask you to take a gander at non-RIAA labels first. When you've got an extra $10 to spend, check out what these labels have to offer first before dropping the cash in the coffers of the cunts that just sued a mother of four for 1.92 million.
There are a few ways to make this easy on yourself
- Sign up for eMusic.com. All of their stuff is RIAA Free.
- Go to riaaradar.com to check out your music. They make it easy to discover what is and isn't with RIAA.
- Listen to Talkingship! We have strived to feature only RIAA Free music since we started, and we're very proud of that.
We love music, and we're guessing, since you've read this article, you love music too. Help us make a difference in this battle with Corporate Music. Support independent music and help force the industry to accept the future of music that has already beaten down their door.

Pink Floyd Re-Unite Live 8 Performance
By JitterbugThis performance is from the 2005 Live8 Show in which Roger Waters rejoined the crew for a special, one-night-only reunion. I think this is the best performance of the bunch, although its a shame that Rick Wright isn't featured during this entire song and Nick only gets a quick side glimpse shot as he sits there at his drum kit.
Shortly after this performance, David Gilmour and Rick Wright teamed up for a tour to support David's newest album, On An Island. Little did they know at the time that this would be the last chance for anyone to play with Rick again. Richard Wright passed away of an undisclosed form of cancer on Sept 15th, 2008. He had been working on a solo project of which we have yet to hear.
Rick might have been a near silent member of Pink Floyd if all you pay attention to are how loud people talk, but just pop in Dark Side of the Moon and try to imagine it without Us and Them and The Great Gig in the Sky, both of which were written by Wright.
The Live8 performance marks our last chance to see these guys play together as a whole. Its hard to deny that their timing was off on a lot of the songs played that night (after all, it had been 24 years since they played together), but it was still a Floyd-Fan's wet dream come true.
Finally, If you like what you see here don't miss the Blu-Ray Remember That Night - Live at the Royal Albert Hall if for nothing other than the extras on the bonus disk with David and Rick clowning around like only old friends can.
Miss you, Richard.

The mighty Clutch!
By NervesOh yes shipheads it is one of Nerves' favorite bands of all time! CLUTCH!
This is the video 'Burning Beard' from the album 'Robot Hive: Exodus'
What are some of your favorite bands and videos? We love to hear ourselves talk, but not as much as we love hearing you guys and gals.
Music is the language we all speak, not math, who uses math? Like, gimme a break and stuff.
If you have a great band you want us to hear send it in. If you are IN a great band you want EVERYONE to hear, definitely send it in. We feature upcoming artists at the end of every show we can. You could be next on Stranded Idol.

The Cat Empire
By JitterbugJitterbug and Nerves are both in complete agreement about this band. The Cat Empire is from Australia and feature a large group of musicians that play various different instruments. Their fourth album, So Many Nights, has become one of the most played albums on the ship. We can't recommend this band enough! Please take a moment to check them out and then get to your local cd shop and buy yourself a copy of any of their excellent albums.
